A representative from the Meteorological Synthesizing Centre – East (MSC-E), Jan Gačnik, together with colleagues from the Department of Environmental Sciences (JSI-O2), participated in the Sixth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Minamata Convention on Mercury (COP-6). COP-6 was held in Geneva, Switzerland, from 3 to 7 November 2025. The Minamata Convention is the largest international agreement aimed at reducing the anthropogenic contribution of mercury (Hg) to the environment and to human health. COP-6 focused on assessing progress and agreeing on collective next steps to meet the objectives of the Convention.
The COP convenes every two years and represents the most significant global gathering of experts, policymakers, non-governmental organisations, and national representatives in the field of mercury pollution.
MSC-E participated in a Knowledge Lab titled “From Science to Policy – Integrating Data for the First Effectiveness Evaluation”, where the work of the modelling team within the Multi-Compartment Mercury Modelling and Analysis Project (MCHgMAP), supporting the Open-Ended Scientific Group (OESG), was presented to a broad audience of scientists, policymakers, and other stakeholders. The session initiated discussions on the role of modelling in the effectiveness evaluation of the Minamata Convention, addressing current challenges and exploring how computational models can support decision-making processes.
