The Meteorological Synthesizing Centre – East (MSC-E) is one of the five research centres of the EMEP scientific program, operating under the UNECE Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution (Air Convention). The mission of MSC-E is to assess environmental pollution with toxic substances such as heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants (POPs). For this purpose the Centre develops state-of-the-art modelling tools and conducts cutting-edge research and operational simulations of environmental dispersion of the pollutants on both regional and global scales. The comprehensive assessments provided by MSC-E on pollution trends within specific regions and countries, along with evaluations of transboundary pollution, serve as valuable tools for policymakers to gauge the effectiveness of pollution control measures.

Originally established in Moscow, Russia, in the late 1970s and operating for more than forty years under the Air Convention, MSC-E is now hosted by the Department of Environmental Sciences at the Jožef Stefan Institute (JSI) in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
