Experts from the Meteorological Synthesizing Centre – East (MSC-E) participated in the “International Workshop on the Harmonization of Protocols and Quality Concepts for the Monitoring of Mercury and Mercury Compounds in Marine Ecosystems,” held in Ljubljana from November 11 to 15. The workshop aimed to enhance participants’ understanding of mercury processes in seawater and the measurement methods used to study them. Some MSC-E personnel also contributed to the event through lectures that were integrated into the workshop agenda.
The workshop was organized as part of the project INT7022, titled “Strengthening Ocean Health for Sustainable Development: A Global Approach Using Nuclear and Isotopic Techniques.” This project, funded by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), provides support to 30 participating countries over four years. The assistance includes training, capacity building, targeted proficiency testing, and financial support for sampling equipment, quality assurance standards, and reference materials. These actions aim to produce quality-assured data in marine, terrestrial, and coastal environments, contributing to the achievement of several UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): SDG 13 – “Climate Action,” SDG 14 – “Life Below Water,” and SDG 17 – “Partnerships for the Goals.”
