The 25th meeting of the Task Force on Measurements and Modelling (TFMM) of EMEP took place from May 6-7, 2024, in Warsaw, Poland. TFMM serves as a forum for the Parties to the Air Conventions, EMEP Centres, and other international organisations to discuss and evaluate measurements and modelling, and to further develop working methods and tools. The primary focus of the Task Force is on reviewing and assessing the scientific and operational activities of EMEP related to monitoring and modelling. TFMM also fosters closer collaboration between Parties to the Convention, EMEP Centres, other Convention bodies, international, in particular with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), and the scientific community to strengthen communication and cooperation in air pollution monitoring and modelling.
At the latest TFMM meeting, EMEP Centres and national experts presented their ongoing activities and discussed potential challenges and priorities for the year ahead. Key topics of discussion included the impact of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on tropospheric ozone levels, ozone trend assessments and source apportionment, the implementation of low-cost sensors, and the study of atmospheric particulate matter composition.
In its presentation at the TFMM meeting, MSC-E provided an update on the ongoing capacity-building efforts at the Jožef Stefan Institute, along with its research and development activities and plans for the year. It outlined efforts to operationalise the Centre, including preparatory work for operational modelling and pilot simulations of selected metals and POPs. The Centre also highlighted research and development activities, including updates to and improvements of the GLEMOS chemical transport model, as well as its participation in the Multi-Compartment Mercury Modelling and Analysis Project (MCHgMAP) in collaboration with TF HTAP and the Minamata Convention. Additionally, the Centre introduced a new research initiative focusing on a country-scale pilot study of PAH pollution in Slovenia and other Balkan countries.
